Whether you’ve found a stray kitten outside or are fostering for a local shelter, raising kittens is a rewarding but incredibly overwhelming experience.
Each stage of a kitten’s early life comes with different needs, from warmth and nutrition to litter training and socialization.
The key to successful fostering is being prepared, which includes gathering the right products.
As a fosterer who’s raised dozens of litters, I’ve learned what truly helps and what’s a waste of money.
In this foster kitten essentials guide, I’ve broken down exactly what you need at each stage from birth to 12 weeks. I’ve included all the products I’ve personally used and recommend.

0–2 Weeks: The neonates

In the first two weeks of life, kittens depend solely on their mother (or you if the mama cat is not around). Neonates can’t regulate their own body temperature or toilet themselves.
If their mother isn’t present, they’ll need round-the-clock care, including feeding every 2 hours, stimulating to pee and poop, and a warm environment.
The following foster kitten essentials are CRITICAL for keeping these highly vulnerable beings alive:
- SnuggleSafe Heating Pad – This kitten-safe heating disc will keep your babies warm without overheating. It’s super easy to use— put it in the microwave for 5 minutes, and your kitties will have 10 hours of warmth.
- Soft Fleece Pet Blankets – Line your kittens’ basket or box with a few fleece blankets to create an extra cozy environment.
- Kitten Nursing Kit – This feeding set is designed for the tiniest of kittens. It has small nipples and a range of syringes, helping you find the best feeding method for your foster.
- Kitten formula (KMR) – NEVER give a kitten cow’s milk. Instead, choose a high-quality powdered formula like KMR.
- Digital Kitchen Scale – A small kitchen scale is vital as you must do daily weight checks to monitor your kitten’s growth. Keep a notebook or use an app to record the weighings and ensure they are gaining.
2–4 Weeks: The Peaceful Sleepers

At this age, kittens will open their eyes start wobbling around. But even though they are more alert, they still spend most of their time sleeping.
Most importantly, 2-4-week-old kittens are still entirely dependent on their caregiver. So, along with the essentials from the previous section, make sure you have the following on hand:
- Pet Playpen – A small enclosure will keep your kitties safe while they start moving around and exploring the world.
- Soft Toys – Small stuffed animals or kitten-safe toys will give kittens comfort and company. But if you want to go one step further, get the Catstages Purr Pillow, which makes calming purr sounds to mimic a mama cat—crucial for solo kittens!
- Low-Sided Litter Box + Non-Clumping Litter – As soon as you notice signs that your kittens are self-toileting (such as wet patches and small poops on blankets), start introducing them to litter. Use a low-sided litter box and unscented, non-clay litter.
4–6 Weeks: The Wobbly Explorers

Kittens 4 to 6 weeks old are quickly becoming more mobile, playful, and independent. At this age, they no longer need your help with toileting (yay!). You can also start weaning them onto wet kitten food, meaning no more night feeds (double yay!)
Here are the foster kitten essentials you’ll need for this transition period:
- Shallow Food Dishes – Non-slip, shallow bowls promote eating and prevent mess. Start by offering gruel (formula + wet food mashed together) a few times a day alongside formula.
- High-Quality Kitten Wet Food – Choose brands specifically formulated for growth, such as Royal Canin Mother & Baby Cat.
- Kitten Kibble (optional) – Once your kitten is comfortably eating wet food, you can also introduce moistened kibble.
- Pet-Safe Wipes – This is a messy time with weaning and litter box training going on! Have plenty of pet wipes on hand to clean their little faces and butts.
6–8 Weeks: The Playful Pouncers

You now have tiny chaos gremlins who demand space, stimulation, and lots of social interaction. To support their curious spirits and playful attitudes while keeping them safe, you’ll need the following:
- Interactive Kitten Toys – Wand toys, kickers, and trackballs will help your kittens build coordination while burning off excess energy.
- Cat Tunnel or Small Cat Tree – These things take playtime to the next level, but you don’t have to splurge—even a makeshift cardboard box maze will do!
- Larger Litter Box – Kittens grow fast, so you might want to upgrade their toilet to something bigger, especially if you’re caring for an entire litter of kittens!
8–12 Weeks: The Growing Personalities

By 8 weeks old, your foster kittens will be eating only solid food (no more formula), playing nonstop, and learning social skills.
If you’re fostering, your kitten will now be ready for their forever home. But while you’re waiting to find the purrfect family for them, you’ll need these foster kitten essentials:
- Scratch Post – At this age, kittens develop the urge to scratch. So get them used to scratching appropriate surfaces early with a designated scratch post.
- Kitten Carrier – At 8 weeks old, they can get their first vaccination. Introduce them to a carrier to help them prepare for their first vet trip.
- Soft Grooming Brush – Now is the purrfect time to start building a good grooming ritual. A soft bristle brush is ideal.
- Kitten Treats (for training) – Treats made specially for kittens will help you train your little ones to be the best house cats they can be. Give them a few treats after grooming, when getting in their carrier, and even after covering the poop!
