The Best Vets In Phuket For Cats

As a regular cat fosterer, I sometimes feel like I spend more time at animal hospitals than at home!

Needless to say, throughout the years, I’ve learned a lot about vets in Phuket!

I’ve noticed that some vets are excellent at handling certain cases but may lack experience in another area.

So now, I have a go-to Phuket vet for each different thing. 😅

Knowing how challenging it can be to find a trustworthy veterinarian in an area you’re new to, I wanted to share my insights with you.

As I’m based in South Phuket, I mainly have experience with vets in this part of the island.

However, I’m also sharing some vets in the north of Phuket based on what rescuers and pet parents there have shared with me.

What Is The Best Phuket Animal Hospital?

There is no one best vet in Phuket for all your cat’s needs. But there may be veterinarians who excel in certain areas. So, I’ve divided this list into the following:

  • Vaccines & minor problems
  • Sterilization
  • Emergencies & critical conditions
  • Surgery
  • Pet travel preparation

Best Vets In Phuket For Vaccines & Minor Problems – J&D, Chalong

Kitten receiving treatment at a vets in Phuket

Dr. Joice at J&D Veterinary Clinic in Chalong has been my go-to vet for many years.

Dr. Joice is a well-loved vet in the Chalong community, and I take many cats and kittens to her for vaccinations and minor medical issues, such as:

  • Abscess and wound care
  • Bacterial infections or digestive issues
  • Cat flu
  • General check-ups

J&D is a small veterinary clinic, so Dr. Joice is limited in what she can do. For example, she has no X-ray machine and cannot do many operations.

However, Dr. Joice is incredibly compassionate and genuinely cares about animals. She is also very honest in terms of treatment needs and pricing.

In fact, her pricing is very reasonable and considerably lower than the big animal hospitals in the area.

Because of her low prices, I also frequently use J&D for sterilizations.

Best Vets In Phuket For Sterilization – iRak, Phuket Town

Stray cat recovering after sterilization

iRak Pet Hospital in Phuket Town is one of my more recent finds.

iRak recently helped me out with sterilizing some street cats, and I wanted to include them on this list for three reasons:

  • They are highly experienced with spaying and neutering.
  •  They are one of the only vets in Phuket that will spay pregnant cats.
  •  You can keep the cat at the clinic until they recover for a low price (which is an excellent option for stray and feral cats)

iRak Pet Hospital also partners with the Soi Dog Foundation to offer free sterilization for community animals. So, the vets here have tons of experience with spaying and neutering.

I recently sterilized two pregnant stray cats at iRak. As I had nowhere to keep them during their recovery period, they stayed at the clinic.

iRak charges 150 baht per night to keep a cat there. If you have two cats that can stay in the same cage, it is 200 baht per night for both cats.

Best Vets In Phuket For Emergencies – Thonglor, Chalong

Baby kitten in intensive care

Thonglor Pet Hospital in Chalong is the only 24-hour pet hospital in south Phuket. And luckily for me, they are just a 2-minute drive from my house!

The vets at Thonglor have saved several critically ill kittens of mine.

Last year, I was fostering a 3-week-old kitten named Mirrie (photo above). One night, she developed fading kitten syndrome; she became weak and unresponsive and was having seizures.

I rushed her straight to Thonglor, and within a couple of hours, the vets stabilized her. Mirrie stayed at Thonglor in intensive care for a few nights before she was well enough to come home.

Since then, Mirrie has been absolutely fine. She was adopted and has grown into a beautiful and healthy cat.

Another foster kitten of mine, Seven, had severe diarrhea and was diagnosed with feline panleukopenia (parvo) – a severe disease with an incredibly high mortality rate.

Again, Thonglor saved Seven by keeping her in intensive care on IV fluids for a couple of nights. After just two days, she was no longer testing positive for parvo nor showing any symptoms, so she came home.

Like Mirrie, Seven got adopted and now lives a happy and healthy life.

Best Vets In Phuket For Surgery – VetMed, Rawai

Kitten recovering after leg amputation

Aside from sterilizations, I’ve never had a cat or kitten need surgery here… until recently.

I rescued a young kitten (named Georgie) from the street who had been involved in a traumatic accident, resulting in him losing half of his rear right leg.

His paw had come completely off, and Georgie was trying to walk on the stump. As a result, the wound was open and raw, and what I imagine extremely painful and sensitive (see photo below).

It was clear that leaving the leg how it was wasn’t an option as the wound would continue to open and get infected.

Dr Tan at VetMed in Rawai instantly saw the seriousness of Georgie’s case and called the surgeon to come and take a look. They both agreed that he needed amputation ASAP.

The surgeon, Dr Pete, demonstrated a high level of professionalism and care. He explained the risks, walked me through the procedure, and even told me about his ‘plan B’ in case of an emergency.

The aftercare from VetMed was also top-notch. Georgie stayed at the clinic for three nights while Dr Pete monitored and managed his pain.

The incision from an amputation is fairly large, especially for a young kitten like Georgie. So I was surprised how fast it healed and how quick Georgie was able to resume his normal cat activities.

Best Vets In Phuket For Pet Travel Preparation – J&D, Chalong

Some vets in Phuket can also help you prepare cats to travel overseas

If you adopt a cat in Thailand and don’t plan to stay here forever, you’ll need to consider preparing your cat to travel overseas.

Dr Joice at J&D Veterinary Clinic can help with this. She is incredibly knowledgeable about the requirements for taking cats and dogs from Thailand to other countries, including the UK, USA, and Europe.

She has successfully helped many expats through the process and can ensure all your paperwork is in order so you don’t run into trouble.

However, you should know that preparing a cat or dog for international travel is a long and complex process.

To help you get started, I’ve created a FREE Pet Relocation Guide that walks you through each step.

If you know you won’t live in Thailand forever, I strongly recommend preparing well in advance as it can take up to six months to get the required documents.

Although I have no plans to leave Thailand in the foreseeable future, my cats already have all the travel paperwork and are ready to fly should I ever need to leave Thailand on short notice.

Best Vets In North Phuket For Cats

Although I don’t have personal experience with vets in North Phuket, I know other rescuers and pet parents who do. So I contacted them, and they shared their go-to vets…

HugMe Animal Hospital

HugMe Animal Hospital is a new and modern 24-hour animal hospital in Cherngtalay.

They have impressive state-of-the-art equipment, including an oxygen chamber, an X-ray room, and a CT scanner, which is very hard to find in Thailand.

Simone from Rawai Animal Lovers has tons of experience with HugMe. They have helped her with many rescue cats, including performing surgery for broken bones and treating chronic diseases like feline Leukemia and kidney and liver disease.

Thalang Animal Hospital

If you’re looking for a low-cost yet highly knowledgeable vet in north Phuket, Dr. John at Thalang Animal Hospital is an excellent choice.

Sonya from Sonya’s Angel Paws regularly uses Thalang Animal Hospital for street dogs and cats. They are very professional and competent, yet you won’t get issued a high bill at the end.

As well as low-cost vaccinations and sterilizations, Dr. John can do various surgical procedures, such as fixing broken limbs. And as their nightly charges are very reasonable, it’s easy to keep sick street animals at Thalang Animal Hospital until they recover.

Layan Vet Clinic

Layan Vet Clinic is another great option in Thalang. They offer a wide range of services, including blood tests, x-rays, and some surgical procedures.

Layan Vet Clinic can also prepare the pet passports and travel documentation required for taking cats and dogs out of Thailand.

Important Disclaimer

The vets I’ve mentioned in this article are those I have personal experience with. There are many other vets in Phuket that I have not used, and so have not mentioned.

It’s also important to say that while I’ve had positive experiences with the vets mentioned, this does not guarantee you will.

Every case is different. Vets typically try their best, but sometimes they don’t get it right. This is the case everywhere in the world, not just in Thailand.
