Years ago, there was only one type of cat carrier—the classic, hard plastic crate with a steel wire door.
As a child, I remember the challenge of trying to get our pet cat into this carrier every time she needed to go to the vet.
The steel door’s mechanism was so complicated that by the time I managed to close it, the cat had already escaped. This Simon’s Cat video sums up the experience perfectly!
Thankfully, today, there are many more choices when it comes to cat carriers.
Cat carriers have evolved into fashionable accessories, ranging from backpacks to carriers on wheels to soft mesh holdalls.
But with so many new types of cat carriers on the market, how do you determine the best one?
In this article, I’m breaking down all the options and explaining what to look for in a cat backpack or carrier. I’ll then share my top picks on the best cat carriers for travel, vet visits, and more!

Types Of Cat Carriers & Backpacks
Let’s explore the most common types of cat carriers and backpacks…
Hard Crates

Pros:
- Durable
- Strong & safe
- Easy to clean
Cons:
- Heavy
- Takes up more space
- More expensive than other types
This classic cat carrier style is made from hard plastic with a steel wire door opening, making it one of the most durable and safest options for transporting cats.
However, they can be heavy, bulky, and difficult to get cats in and out of.
Some manufacturers have realized how difficult it is to put a cat in a carrier via a side door and added a top opening. This makes the process easier as you can gently “drop” your cat into the carrier rather than try to push them inside.
Soft Carriers

Pros:
- Lightweight
- Takes up minimal storage space
Cons:
- Difficult to clean
- The fabric can get damaged by claws or teeth
In recent years, soft cat carriers have become more popular than hard ones. This is because they are lightweight and easy to carry and store (most are foldable).
Plus, let’s be honest, they look much nicer than the classic hard crates. They come in various designs, styles, and sizes; some are even expandable.
However, there are some downsides, too. Firstly, they are difficult to clean should your cat have an anxiety-induced accident on the way to the vet.
Secondly, as they are made from fabric like nylon or mesh, your cat could potentially damage or rip the material with their claws or teeth.
However, in my experience, soft cat carriers are safer than they look. I’ve used them for numerous cats, including feral ones, and not one cat has managed to escape them or even rip a hole in them.
Soft Backpacks

Pros:
- Lightweight
- Great for travel
- Easy to store
- Trendy
Cons:
- Difficult to clean
- The fabric can get damaged by claws or teeth
Cat backpacks are becoming increasingly popular. They typically come in two styles – soft and hard.
Soft cat backpacks are super lightweight, making them one of the best travel options.
If you take public transport, they offer an easy, fuss-free way to transport your cat. Likewise, if you have an adventure kitty, you can easily bring it along for walks and hikes in a cat backpack like this.
But you might wonder, “Are cat backpacks safe?”
Well, soft cat backpacks are made from the same materials as soft carriers. So again, there is a risk of the cat tearing the fabric.
However, if the backpack is closed correctly, it should be safe. Make sure the zips are pulled to the bottom of the carrier rather than in the middle, where it would be easier for the cat to separate the zippers.
Hard Shell Backpacks

Pros:
- Lightweight
- Great for travel
- Trendy
Cons:
- Lack of ventilation
- Can get hot inside
- Lack of privacy
Hardshell cat backpacks typically feature a transparent plastic front for the cat to look out of.
However, the problem with many hardshell cat backpacks is that the cat has nowhere to hide.
Unlike many soft cat backpacks, the hard shell style does not have material flaps that you can roll down to give the cat some privacy. Instead, they have no choice but to see everything around them.
Considering this, are cat backpacks cruel?
To be honest, I think very few cats enjoy being in this type of cat backpack, which is why I never use them. Cats feel extremely exposed in these backpacks, which can make them stressed or anxious.
There cat backpacks are also not a good choice for hot climates. The plastic heats up quickly in hot weather, causing the cat to overheat.
Cat Carriers With Wheels

Although less common, you might have seen a cat carrier with wheels. I don’t particularly recommend this carrier style, as I don’t see any additional benefits to it having wheels.
You might think this carrier is a good option if you’re moving overseas and taking your cat, as a rolling carrier lets you pull your cat around the airport like a suitcase.
While the idea may be nice, it isn’t practical. Airlines have strict rules for the carrier size you can take on board. So finding a cat carrier with wheels that matches those dimensions is unlikely.
Cat Carrier Vs. Backpack
So what’s best, a cat carrier or backpack?
As they both have pros and cons, it depends on what works best for you and your cat.
If you have a large cat, they might feel more comfortable in a carrier as there is more space to lay down and stretch out. Thus, cat carriers may also be more comfortable for longer trips.
However, cat backpacks are very convenient as they allow you to carry your cat around hands-free. Moreover, social and confident cats often like backpacks as they can look around.
But as I discuss next, ensure you choose a soft cat backpack that provides privacy and shade from the sun.
What To Look For In Cat Carriers?

Whichever style of cat transport you decide on, ensure it is safe and comfortable for your kitty by choosing one with the following features:
- Ventilation – Lots of ventilation is crucial, especially in hot countries. Look for a carrier with multiple mesh panels and larger ventilation holes for good air circulation.
- Privacy – Roll-down flaps and shutters are crucial for anxious cats. Choosing a carrier with additional privacy like this will help your cat stay calm when traveling. Flaps that cover the mesh panels also serve a secondary purpose, protecting your cat from the elements, such as direct sunlight, heat, and light rain.
- Safe & sturdy – The best cat carriers are lightweight but strong. If choosing a soft carrier, ensure the material is thick rather than flimsy, and check that the zippers are durable and not too easy to open.
- Easy to clean – Look for a cat carrier with absorbent removable pads, which you can take out and wash. Moreover, if choosing a soft carrier or backpack, pick one with an inner lining that you can easily wipe clean.
The 3 Best Cat Carriers & Backpacks
Here are my 3 favorite cat carriers and backpacks and the purposes for which they are best suited.
Best Cat Backpack For Vet Visits – Cat Carrier Holdall

This cat carrier is super easy to transport, whether you’re walking, driving, or taking public transport. You can carry it like a holdall, a shoulder bag, or a cross-body bag.
I particularly like that it balances privacy and ventilation. It has mesh panels on all sides, giving 360-degree airflow, yet each panel is small, so the cat doesn’t feel exposed.
There is also a removable, washable soft bed to help your kitty feel relaxed and cozy while waiting at the vet clinic. Plus, a top and side opening makes bringing your kitty in and out of the carrier easy.
Best Cat Backpack For Adventures – PetAmi Cat Backpack

I love this cat backpack because you can wear it on your back, shoulder, or carry it.
It’s particularly great for traveling on foot or via public transport, as it allows you to be hands-free and the weight is spread across your entire back (no aching arm!)
It’s super breathable, with side and front mesh panels, and there are handy pockets on the sides and front (including a zip one) so you can store treats, water, or even your wallet and keys.
It also rates high in privacy. The mesh panels cover only the top half of the carrier, so if your kitty is feeling anxious, they can lay down and become invisible to the world!
The carrier opens from both sides, and there is a smaller entry point at the front, which is ideal for kittens.
Best Cat Carrier For Travel – Expandable Cat Carrier Bag

If you’re taking your cat on a long car trip where they will stay in their carrier for an extended time, I recommend choosing an expandable cat carrier like this one.
You can unzip two sides to expand the carrier, giving your cat ample space to sprawl out. Expanding the carrier also introduces additional mesh panel ventilation so your cat will stay calm and cool on long trips.
I also really like the large top opening of this carrier, as it allows you to easily put your cat inside and take them out.
It also comes with a shoulder strap, letting you carry it by hand, on your shoulder, or across your body.
This is also my top choice for flying with cats. It fits the size regulations for various airlines, meaning it will fit comfortably under your seat (when closed up) during takeoff and landing. Then, during the flight (and when waiting to board the flight), you can expand the sides ti to give your kitty more space to stretch out!
Final Thoughts: Which Cat Carrier Is Best?
So which cat carrier is best?
In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with a soft carrier holdall that has plenty of ventilation, privacy, and a top opening.
If you’re still unsure, I recommend visiting a pet shop where you can see the size and quality of the carrier before purchasing.
Or, if you’re ordering online, read the reviews and check the size dimensions first to ensure your cat won’t feel crammed.
